Self Kindness

Self-Kindness. What does this mean to you? Do you show yourself the same level of compassion, love and care you show to your family, friends or voluntary community organization where you may donate your time and energy? Do you even give yourself a second thought?

Research has shown that if we can be kinder to ourselves then we tend to look after ourselves better. We will do things that will help us look after ourselves better rather than punish ourselves or set ourselves targets that are impossible to achieve. Don’t know where to begin?

On of the ways you can support yourself is turn off social media for at least a day per week. It’s very easy to get caught in comparing yourself to others and before you realise, the green-eyed monster has started to creep into your thinking. This can also make you feel stressed.

Try having a techno-free day. When we are being distracted by smart phones, tablets and computers we’re having our attention drawn away from our family, friends and the here and now. Switch off your phone, television, computer and potter around outside in your garden or local park. Perhaps invite a friend over for a cuppa. Talk to your family or friends, do a yoga class or perhaps learn how to meditate. At the end of the day, spend a minute or two taking note of how calm and unrushed you have felt by simply turning off your mobile device for a short period of time. Set yourself a goal of one day a week of turning off your devices. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but I assure you that you will feel calmer and less stressed. Why not encourage your family to join you in having a one-day a week techno free day and do a yoga class together? You will all reap the benefits.

Taking time out.

What are you thinking when you look at this image of a person lying in a sun drenched hammock?

Do you think to yourself, Oh I really need a holiday? Or perhaps this image serves to remind you that you are pushing yourself a little too hard and you may need to relax and take some well earned time to rest, relax and reflect. Sometimes, it is the little things that make a difference in our overall health and wellbeing. So, perhaps the next time an image, a song or an aroma grabs your attention in some way, take that as a sign to stop what you are doing and take some time out....for you
